Overview

5S — Seiri (Sort), Seiton (Set in Order), Seiso (Shine), Seiketsu (Standardise), Shitsuke (Sustain) — is the foundation on which every other Japanese quality and efficiency methodology rests. Without 5S, Kaizen has nothing stable to improve, Kanban has no organised space to function, and quality systems become compliance theatre. Japan first applied 5S in manufacturing in the 1950s and 1960s; within decades, the same discipline had transformed Japanese government offices, tax authorities, post offices, hospitals, and police stations. This programme teaches participants to implement all five S disciplines specifically in government and service environments, using live models from Japanese public institutions. Participants visit a Japanese government facility or public hospital to observe 5S in a non-manufacturing context before implementing their own 5S pilot in a real workspace.

Participants photograph their current workspace (desk, storage, shared areas) to create a baseline. They also note the three most frequent time-wasting or frustration-causing workspace issues. These become Day 2 exercise material.

During Program

Tokyo 5S Immersion

Five days: all five 5S disciplines, hands-on workspace exercises, Japanese public facility site visit, and a Day 5 5S audit and 30-day implementation plan presentation.

After Program

30-Day 5S Launch & Audit

Participants launch their 5S campaign within 30 days, conduct a formal audit with photographic evidence, and share results at a group debrief call at Week 8.

Nomination Eligibility

This programme is designed for professionals nominated by their organisations to undergo specialised training in Japan. Nominees should have organisational sponsorship and a clear mandate to apply the learnings upon return.
