Overview

Jidoka (自働化) — often translated as "automation with a human touch" — is one of the two foundational pillars of the Toyota Production System, alongside Just-in-Time. Its origin is Sakichi Toyoda's automatic loom, which stopped itself automatically when a thread broke — instead of producing rolls of defective fabric. This single insight — that machines must detect their own failures and alert humans rather than continue producing defects — is now the most important design principle for the AI age. As organisations race to automate, those that deploy AI without Jidoka principles build systems that fail silently and at scale. This programme teaches participants to apply Jidoka's detect-stop-alert-improve cycle to AI systems, robotic processes, and digital workflows. Participants list the three most critical automated systems in their organisation, identify what each system does when it fails, and note whether a human is alerted or the failure is silent. This inventory becomes Day 3 analysis material.

During Program

Tokyo Jidoka Immersion

Five structured days: Jidoka philosophy, smart-factory visit, AI and digital workflow workshops, and Day 5 automation strategy presentation to expert panel.

After Program

Automation Audit & Roadmap Launch

Participants conduct a Jidoka audit of their most critical automated system within 30 days and present their roadmap to leadership. Results shared in a 60-day group debrief call.

Nomination Eligibility

This programme is designed for professionals nominated by their organisations to undergo specialised training in Japan. Nominees should have organisational sponsorship and a clear mandate to apply the learnings upon return.
