Overview
Japan experiences more than 1,500 earthquakes per year yet consistently records some of the lowest disaster fatality rates in the world. This programme explores how the concept of Bosai (disaster preparedness) is woven into Japanese society from primary school curricula to municipal emergency planning. Participants visit the Sendai Bosai Centre, community resilience hubs, and schools where children run earthquake drills as a normal part of daily life.
Program Objectives
- Understand the philosophy and institutional structure of Japan Bosai culture.
- Analyse the role of education and community in disaster preparedness.
- Design a national or organisational disaster-preparedness culture programme.
