Shu-Ha-Ri: Japanese Competency Development from Imitation to Innovation

The Japanese three-stage skill acquisition model — follow the rule completely (Shu), break it after mastery (Ha), then transcend it to innovate your own method (Ri).

Tokyo, Japan
5 days 35 hrs Tokyo, Japan ar / 15 seats

Overview

Shu-Ha-Ri originates in Japanese martial arts and traditional crafts, but has been adopted as a framework for professional development in manufacturing (Toyota), software engineering (Agile/Scrum), and corporate training. This programme teaches HR and L&D professionals how to design competency development pathways that respect the Shu-Ha-Ri progression — preventing the common failure of rushing employees to innovate before they have mastered the fundamentals.

Program Objectives

  • Understand the Shu-Ha-Ri model and its application to professional competency development.
  • Design a Shu-Ha-Ri based training pathway for a specific role or skill.
  • Evaluate existing training programmes for Shu-Ha-Ri alignment.

Requirements

  • HR directors, L&D managers, talent development specialists, and department heads responsible for employee capability building.

Why This Program?

Master the Three Stages of Japanese Skill Mastery.

Five days learning Shu-Ha-Ri — the framework Toyota and Agile use to develop competency from imitation to innovation.

Why this program
Most organisations rush employees to innovate before they master fundamentals. Shu-Ha-Ri prevents this failure by providing a structured progression from imitation to innovation.
Why Japan
Japan is the only culture that formalised a three-stage skill acquisition model used across martial arts, manufacturing, and software engineering.
Experience Summary
Five days in Tokyo: Shu-Ha-Ri origins, Shu stage design, Ha stage facilitation, Ri stage conditions, and competency pathway redesign.

Nomination Eligibility

This programme is designed for professionals nominated by their organisations to undergo specialised training in Japan. Nominees should have organisational sponsorship and a clear mandate to apply the learnings upon return.

Why Train in Japan

Japan is the birthplace of the methodologies taught in this programme. Training in Japan provides direct exposure to the original practices, site visits to world-class facilities, and interaction with Japanese experts who pioneered these approaches — an experience impossible to replicate in a local classroom.

Why Train Overseas

Overseas training in Japan offers immersive access to the source of these management and operational philosophies. Participants gain cultural context, real-world observation, and networking opportunities with Japanese organisations that cannot be delivered through domestic or online alternatives.

Field Visits Note

Field visits are subject to host organisation availability and may be substituted with alternative sites of equivalent educational value without prior notice.
