Tunnel Engineering in Seismic Environments & Soft Soil

Japan unique technologies for tunnelling in soft soil and high-seismic environments — engineering solutions unmatched anywhere else.

Tokyo, Japan
5 days 35 hrs Tokyo, Japan ar / 15 seats

Overview

Tokyo is built on soft alluvial soil and sits on multiple fault lines, yet it has one of the world most extensive and reliable underground rail networks. Japanese tunnel engineers have developed unique boring machines, grouting techniques, and seismic-isolation tunnel joints to solve these challenges. This programme combines lectures by leading tunnel engineers with visits to active tunnel construction sites and completed underground infrastructure.

Program Objectives

  • Understand the geotechnical challenges of tunnelling in soft soil and seismic zones.
  • Evaluate TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) selection for different soil conditions.
  • Apply Japanese tunnel engineering standards to underground project design.
  • Develop a seismic design specification for a metro or utility tunnel.

Requirements

  • Tunnelling engineers, metro infrastructure project managers, geotechnical specialists, and underground construction contractors. Basic knowledge of geotechnical engineering and tunnelling methods is recommended.

Why This Program?

Tokyo Built the World Most Reliable Underground Rail on Soft Soil and Fault Lines. Learn How.

Five days with Japan leading tunnel engineers designing seismic specifications for your underground project.

Why this program
Soft soil and seismic zones are the hardest conditions for underground construction. Japan has decades of real-world experience building tunnels, metros, and utilities that remain safe and reliable. This programme combines technical lectures with active site visits and specification drafting.
Why Japan
Japan operates some of the world longest and most reliable tunnel networks in the most challenging soil and seismic conditions, producing unique TBM, grouting, and seismic-isolation technologies.
Experience Summary
Five days in Tokyo: soft-soil geotechnics, TBM selection, active site visits, seismic-isolation methods, and a design specification for your tunnel project.

Program Value

Active Site Access
See live TBM operations and ground improvement techniques in Tokyo.
Seismic Standards
Learn Japanese seismic-isolation and tunnel design codes applicable to your region.
Design Output
Leave with a draft specification for a tunnel or metro project.

Learning Journey

During Program
Active Site Visit
Observe TBM operations and ground improvement in a live Tokyo tunnel project.
During Program

Nomination Eligibility

This programme is designed for professionals nominated by their organisations to undergo specialised training in Japan. Nominees should have organisational sponsorship and a clear mandate to apply the learnings upon return.

Why Train in Japan

Japan is the birthplace of the methodologies taught in this programme. Training in Japan provides direct exposure to the original practices, site visits to world-class facilities, and interaction with Japanese experts who pioneered these approaches — an experience impossible to replicate in a local classroom.

Why Train Overseas

Overseas training in Japan offers immersive access to the source of these management and operational philosophies. Participants gain cultural context, real-world observation, and networking opportunities with Japanese organisations that cannot be delivered through domestic or online alternatives.

Field Visits Note

Field visits are subject to host organisation availability and may be substituted with alternative sites of equivalent educational value without prior notice.

Certificate Statement

NIHON GATE Certificate is awarded upon successful completion of all programme days, participation in all activities, and delivery of the final project or presentation as required.
