Overview
Tokyo is built on soft alluvial soil and sits on multiple fault lines, yet it has one of the world most extensive and reliable underground rail networks. Japanese tunnel engineers have developed unique boring machines, grouting techniques, and seismic-isolation tunnel joints to solve these challenges. This programme combines lectures by leading tunnel engineers with visits to active tunnel construction sites and completed underground infrastructure.
Program Objectives
- Understand the geotechnical challenges of tunnelling in soft soil and seismic zones.
- Evaluate TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) selection for different soil conditions.
- Apply Japanese tunnel engineering standards to underground project design.
