Overview
Japan is the global leader in plant factory technology — fully enclosed, artificially lit growing systems that produce leafy vegetables, strawberries, and medicinal herbs year-round with 99% less water than conventional farming. Chiba University is the research hub for this technology. Participants visit multiple commercial vertical farms, meet engineers and agronomists, and analyse the economics of scaling the model in water-scarce Gulf environments.
Program Objectives
- Understand the technology stack of Japanese plant-factory systems.
- Analyse the economics and scalability of vertical farming for arid regions.
- Design a vertical farming pilot project for a Gulf context.
