Overview
In the 1960s, Kitakyushu sea was called the "Sea of Death" from industrial pollution. By 2011, the same city was recognised by the UN as a model eco-city. This turnaround — driven by citizen activism, corporate accountability, and innovative environmental technology — is one of the most documented environmental transformations in history. This programme visits the Kitakyushu Eco-Town, smart energy systems, and the Hibikinada Green Energy Park for a complete transformation case study.
Program Objectives
- Analyse the governance, citizen, and corporate drivers behind Kitakyushu environmental transformation.
- Evaluate the Eco-Town model as a replicable industrial symbiosis framework.
- Design an environmental transformation strategy for an industrial city.
