Overview
Satoyama (village mountain) landscapes are the mosaic of forests, rice paddies, ponds, and grasslands managed by Japanese rural communities for centuries. UNESCO recognises Satoyama as a model of sustainable land use. This programme visits active Satoyama landscapes near Kyoto, engages with farming communities, and draws policy lessons for rural development, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable food systems in Gulf and Arab countries.
Program Objectives
- Understand the Satoyama concept and its UNESCO recognition as a sustainable land-use model.
- Analyse the governance structures that maintain Satoyama landscapes.
- Apply Satoyama principles to rural development and food security policy.
